Interpreting tail wagging by dogs
Generally speaking, as Pet Parents, we believe that if
dogs wag their tail is simply because they are happy. However, if we take an even closer look, dogs tend to wag their tail also for other forms of communication. For example, when they are worried, nervous or even when they are facing competition upon invasion of their territory.

Tail Wagging is a form of communication
For dogs, wagging their tail is a vital form of communication done through body language as they tend to be avid watchers compared to humans who are known as good listeners. It is, therefore, crucial to pay attention to the position of the tail at any given time.
If the tail is currently in a resting position, it means that the dog is fully relaxed and at ease with the surrounding environment. On the other hand, if the dog holds its tail down or between the legs, it could be interpreted as a sign of fear, either towards another living thing or the area. Furthermore, a dog examining a territory will hold its tail straight out while an aggressive dog will hold the tail vertically. Last but not least, if the tail is held upwards and higher than the natural position, then a positive feeling of excitement can be observed.
It’s always important to keep this in mind, especially when meeting an unknown dog and its owner. Very often, Pet Parents tend to misunderstand this behavior, resulting in an adverse reaction by the dog!
